Coxswain Leadership Camp

2024 Coxswain Leadership Camp Registration is open!

Now in its 11th year, The 9th Seat Coxswain Leadership Camp is ready to ramp up another exciting summer just for coxswains.  My goal is the same as it has been, which is to create the best, most knowledgeable, and enjoyable summer camp experience where coxswains are the main focus.  This is the kind of summer camp that I would have wanted to attend when I was in high school.  As a coxswain, this is going to be your chance to learn about the sport of rowing -- on your terms, and from the rower's perspective.

Week 1: Coxswain Leadership Camp 2015

Week 1: Coxswain Leadership Camp 2015

2024 Dates

  • Week 1: July 8th-12th

  • Week 2: July 15th-19th

  • Week 3: I’m open to it if wait list demand is high. (July 22-26th)

*All Weeks of Coxswain Leadership camp are co-ed. Camp is open to high school-aged athletes 14-19 years old. Collegiate and Master Aged coxswains, please send me an e-mail and we can discuss whether it is appropriate for you to attend.

What Coxswains Can Expect

  • Listen to and share race tapes with fellow coxswains

  • Be athletic and competitive

  • Learn to communicate effectively

  • Learn to row

  • Master the art of docking

  • Steering: How to take turns; maneuverability

  • Better situational awareness

  • Be a stronger leader and teammate

  • College recruiting advice

Come prepared to learn outside of the coxswain seat.  There are many skills to practice that will better prepare you to make the best decisions possible while you're on the water. It is my belief that the best coxswains are the ones who want to be known as a teammate first, an athlete second, and a coxswain third.  There are nine seats in an 8+ that combine into one in order to make that boat as fast as it can be.  This camp will help you be that 9th seat who makes a difference in boat speed.

Location

Conibear Shellhouse

Conibear Shellhouse

The 9th Seat Coxswain Leadership Camp will take place in Seattle at the University of Washington's Conibear Shellhouse.  Campers will get an idea of what it's like to train in a Division I athletics facility.

Campers will be staying on the University of Washington's Campus in Willow Hall.  Meals, which are included in the camp fee, will take place in Willow Hall's dining facility.  There will be camp staff supervision at all times.  Summer temperatures for the Pacific Northwest are, on average, in the upper 70's.  Fans will be available for each athlete if they need their rooms cooler at night.  All dorm rooms are wired with ethernet, so an ethernet cable is recommended.  Common areas have wireless internet.  Bedding and towels are included.
